The community of Akerebiata will enjoy an electrifying Ramadan football competition, which will commence on Sunday at the just-upgraded football pitch at Akerebiata, Ilorin, Kwara State.
This giant tournament is poised to deliver an exhilarating grassroots football extravaganza among the youth in the community and surrounding areas, courtesy of sports promoter Saka Bola Morrow, who is organizing this year's Ramadan Cup in grand style, coinciding with the holy month.
The tournament is being sponsored by Senator Sadiq Umar, whose unwavering dedication to grassroots sports development has garnered widespread acclaim from residents and youth organizations in the area and Kwara State at large.
The football tournament will kick off on Sunday, March 8, 2026, and feature 12 participating teams vying for the collective and individual trophy, promising an electrifying atmosphere.
In a pre-tournament statement, Morrow revealed that the Ramadan Cup aims to engage young footballers in Akerebiata and surrounding communities in productive sporting activities during the fasting period, fostering a sense of camaraderie and healthy competition.
The 12 participating teams will benefit from comprehensive kit sponsorship courtesy of Senator Umar, who has also pledged an array of prizes for the final match.
Furthermore, Umar's contributions extend to the upgrading of the iconic Akerebiata Wembley football field, which has undergone surface improvements and received new goal nets and corner flags, thereby enhancing its competitive appeal.
Beyond promoting grassroots football development, the Ramadan Cup seeks to cultivate unity and rivalry among local youth, while providing a platform for talented players to showcase their skills and potentially attract the attention of scouts and football administrators.
This will enable them to channel their youthful energy into constructive sporting activities; the initiative aims to divert young people away from social vices, particularly during festive and religious periods.
The 12 registered teams, representing a celebration of unity and youth empowerment, are divided into three groups: รkรจ Oyi United, Flash Bombers, New Stars FA, and King FA in Group A; United Sango FC, Happiness FC, A3 FA, and Gambari United in Group B; and Ilorin East YSFON Legends, Bright Stars FA, Kingshood FA, and Asukuty FA in Group C. Senator Umar is expected to attend the opening ceremony on Sunday, where he will unveil additional grassroots sports development plans.
The final match is also scheduled for the same venue on March 18, 2026.
As I wish all the participating teams good luck and an injury-free tournament
