'N2M PROPOSED PLAYERS' SALARY NOT REALISTIC NOW AMID ECONOMIC DOWNTURN' — EX-SUPER EAGLES LEGEND SHORUNMU BACKS NPFL REFORM DRIVE
Former Super Eagles goalkeeper and 1994 African Nations Cup winner, Coach Ike Shorunmu, has described the proposed N2 million minimum salary for NPFL players as “not realistic at the moment” due to the prevailing economic situation, while commending the League Management Company for driving reforms that are repositioning the league.
Shorunmu, who is the goalkeepers’ trainer of Abia Warriors FC, spoke to journalists at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne, Ogun State, after the Umuahia side’s final match against Remo Stars at the 5th edition of the ValueJet Preseason Tournament.
The ex-international lauded the organizers of the ValueJet Preseason Tournament for providing a competitive platform that allows top NPFL teams to test their readiness ahead of the new season.
“We appreciate the organizers of the ValueJet Football Tournament for putting together this big platform. It gives bigger teams the opportunity to prepare properly and for fans to see quality football before the league starts,” Shorunmu said.
On Abia Warriors’ preparations, the former Shooting Stars goalie said the team has learnt vital lessons from last season’s campaign.
“Despite recording brilliant away wins last season, it is unfortunate that we failed to secured continental ticket due to lapses in concentration and loss of focus at critical moments,” he stated.
“But we have learnt our lessons the hard way. We will not allow that to repeat itself this season. Our target is to redeem our image and push the team forward.”
Speaking on the state of the NPFL, Shorunmu commended the league leadership for creating a more competitive environment.
“Our league is now improving with better shape. Home teams no longer have it easy, and good teams are winning irrespective of the venue. With this approach, the NPFL can compete favorably with other leagues in Africa and globally,” he said.
Addressing the proposed N2 million minimum wage for players, Shorunmu said while the initiative is laudable and long overdue, full implementation may be gradual.
“It is a process and work in progress. The move is important to help us retain our players in the league and also stop the exodus to even smaller leagues in search of greener pastures.
“However, considering the current economic situation, it may not be realistic immediately. But with more sponsorship and partnerships coming into the league, we will get there very soon,” he added.
The Abia Warriors tactician charged his players to remain focused and professional as the new NPFL season kicks off next week with a Southern derby against Kun Khalifat FC.
“It’s a big local derby and a good test for us. I charge my players to stand up for the business. We are ready,” Shorunmu concluded.
