Malik Idris and Oyinkansola Akinyemi have emerged champions in the male and female categories respectively at the Kwara State Chess Tournament organised by the Kwara State Chess Association in honour of seven years of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq's administration.
At the end of the competition, Bello Mubaraq and Adeniyin Favour secured second and third positions respectively in the male category, while Sadiq Abidat Temitope and Al-Imam Kudirat Olamide finished second and third in the female category. Mohammed Olarewaju was also crowned the best junior player of the tournament.
Speaking after the event, the Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Sports Commission, Bola Mogaji, commended the organisers and sponsors for staging the tournament in recognition of the governor's achievements in sports and youth development.
He assured chess players in the state of the commission's commitment to constructing a befitting chess pavilion and providing sponsorship opportunities for athletes to participate in national tournaments.
Also speaking, the sponsor of the competition, Mubaraq Bello, said the tournament was organised to appreciate the efforts of Governor AbdulRazaq in transforming the state over the past seven years.
In his remarks, Duro Toye described the competition as a platform for discovering and nurturing young talents in Kwara State. He commended the organisers and the Kwara State Chess Association for successfully hosting the tournament.
The event attracted chess enthusiasts, players, and sports stakeholders from across the state, with close to one hundred chess players showcasing their strategic skills in a highly competitive atmosphere.
